How to use Tempo and Note Duration Calculator

A metronome mark counts a chosen note value. Declare that value independently of the time signature so quarter-note BPM and dotted-quarter BPM produce different, explicit results in compound meter.

  1. Choose the operation and enter the values described by each field.
  2. Run the calculation locally, then review the units and supported scope.
  3. Copy the report or download the generated result.

Good to know

  • Supports power-of-two note denominators through 64, zero to two dots and positive integer tuplet counts through 32.
  • A 6/8 signature does not automatically change the metronome beat to a dotted quarter.
  • No audio tempo detection, swing, additive meter or nested tuplets.

Common questions

What does three in the time of two mean?

Each target duration is multiplied by 2/3. Choose 1 in the time of 1 for an ordinary note.

Why is my bar duration different in 6/8?

At 120 BPM, a quarter-note beat gives a1.5-second6/8 bar; a dotted-quarter beat gives a1-second bar.
