How to use Character Counter
Different platforms measure text length in different ways. Compare visible graphemes with the code-point, JavaScript, and byte counts used by software limits.
- Enter the exact text you want to measure.
- Compare the visible-character total with the encoding totals.
- Use the count that matches the limit in your destination system.
Good to know
- A grapheme is a user-perceived character: an emoji sequence or a letter plus combining accent can contain multiple code points.
- Whitespace includes spaces, tabs, and line breaks. The byte count uses UTF-8 without a byte-order mark.
Common questions
Why do emoji produce different totals?
A displayed emoji can combine several Unicode code points, and each code point may require more than one UTF-16 code unit or UTF-8 byte.
Which count is JavaScript string.length?
UTF-16 code units is the same measure as JavaScript string.length.
