How to use Automation Exception Budget Calculator

An automated workflow still needs a bounded way to handle failures. Separate original attempts, a maximum retry allowance and the exceptions that people must resolve instead of hiding them inside a headline ROI.

  1. Enter a consistent planning period, job demand and measured or explicitly assumed failure rate.
  2. Reserve retry attempts and separately state how many failed jobs you assume they recover.
  3. Compare residual exception time and full handling cost with actual manual capacity.

Good to know

  • Unlike before/after ROI, this budgets a failure queue and identifies unresolved expected work. It does not run automation or predict independent retry probabilities.
  • With zero retries, retry recovery must also be zero. Human handling minutes must be positive; review capacity is a whole-count floor.
  • Each text field is limited to 8,000 characters and each CSV/list to 100 data rows. Numbers must be finite nonnegative decimals below 1 billion; whole counts and per-tool limits are stricter. Unsupported tiny/overflowing results are refused.
  • Local deterministic processing: no AI model calls, uploads, account connections, messages or saved input. Review any downloaded artifact before sharing.

Research behind this workbench

These cases explain the business mechanism. The workbench is ToolJovia's independent adaptation, not a claim about the company's internal workflow or an endorsement.

Common questions

Why charge the maximum retry count for all initial failures?

It is a conservative execution allowance you can inspect. It avoids inventing how soon each job succeeds; actual invoices may be lower.

Does enough budget mean enough human capacity?

No. The full handling budget values all residual work, while the capacity check separately shows whether the hours you entered can cover it.
