How to use NATO Phonetic Alphabet
Prepare a clear spelling of a name or reference for a call. Letter words use Alfa and Juliett; this is a spelling aid, not pronunciation audio or Morse code.
- Choose letters-to-code-words or code-words-to-letters.
- For decoding, separate code words with spaces and text words with /.
- Run the conversion and review any literal digits or punctuation.
Good to know
- The official 26 letter code words are supported. Digits and punctuation remain literal, without aviation numeral pronunciation.
- Whitespace collapses to word separators. A literal slash is escaped as [/]. Non-ASCII input is rejected in encoding mode.
- Decoding outputs uppercase; it is not a translation, speech generator, or radio-procedure certification.
Common questions
Why Alfa rather than Alpha?
Alfa is the spelling in the international radiotelephony spelling alphabet; Juliett similarly has two final t letters.
How is this different from Morse?
It replaces letters with spoken code words rather than dot-and-dash signals.
