How to use Image to ASCII Art
Downsample the image to a text grid, composite transparent samples over your chosen color and map weighted RGB brightness to printable ASCII characters. Download actual plain text that can be pasted into a monospaced editor.
- Load the synthetic example or enter your own bounded input.
- Run locally and inspect the result before downloading.
- Copy the text report or download the generated artifact.
Good to know
- At most 8 MiB, 4 megapixels and 4096 pixels per side. Static PNG, baseline JPEG and simple VP8/VP8L WebP only; animation, progressive JPEG and extended WebP are refused. Structural preflight bounds allocation; the browser still decodes compressed pixels. Some PNG metadata profiles are refused. No file upload.
- 8–160 columns and at most 160 rows. The character aspect is an explicit display assumption; fonts, line height and fallback glyphs affect the appearance.
- Uses weighted sRGB channel values, not calibrated perceptual luminance. Canvas downsampling affects fine detail. Ramp is restricted to 2–32 printable ASCII characters and may include spaces.
Common questions
Why does it look stretched in my editor?
Use a monospaced font and adjust the character height-to-width assumption to match its line height.
Is the download an image?
The output is a plain text file. Its characters remain editable and searchable.
