How to use Heightmap to Normal Map Generator

Convert a selected height channel into an opaque tangent-style normal-map PNG. Normalized central-difference or Sobel slopes use one source pixel as the horizontal/vertical spacing. Strength scales slopes; a DirectX switch flips only the encoded green normal component.

  1. Provide local heightmap, slope strength.
  2. Choose the supported mode and run the tool. Review its assumptions and any reported errors.
  3. Copy the result or download a separate output; reset to clear the current form.

Good to know

  • Static PNG, baseline JPEG or simple WebP only;8MiB/file,4096px per side. Structural preflight runs before native decode; animations, extended WebP, progressive JPEG and compressed PNG metadata are rejected.
  • Separate worker:10seconds loading/preparation,2seconds compute. Canvas operates on decoded8-bit browser channels, not raw sensor or color-calibrated values.
  • At most1048576 source pixels. Luminance uses .2126R+.7152G+.0722B on decoded channel bytes; no gamma linearization or physical texel-scale inference.
  • Flat output rounds to128,128,255. Output does not reconstruct geometry, calibrate real surface normals or infer depth from a photograph.
  • Inputs are processed on this device and are not automatically saved or uploaded.

Common questions

Why might the result differ from a3D application?

Height scale, texel spacing, derivative kernels and Y conventions vary. This tool states its chosen numerical model so you can match the target convention.

Does this change my original input?

No. The tool returns a separate result. Review that output before using it in another application.
