How to use Plain GIFT Question Bank Inspector

Inspect a small exported or authored question bank without uploading it to an LMS. The supported profile identifies single-choice, true/false and exact short-answer alternatives, exposes duplicate titles and preserves the original source. Unsupported question types or syntax stop the review rather than being silently discarded.

  1. Choose a UTF-8 GIFT file whose questions use explicit titles and [plain] formatting, or load the original example.
  2. Run the strict review and fix or separately inspect every unsupported construct reported as an error.
  3. Download JSON source evidence or the answer-record CSV; keep the answer key private and test imports in your own LMS separately.

Good to know

  • One UTF-8 file of at most 200,000 bytes, 3,000 lines, 100 question blocks and 10,000 characters per question, with at most 20 answers. Each block needs an explicit nonblank ::title::, [plain] format and one final answer block; questions are separated by blank lines.
  • Supports whole-line // comments, escaped control characters/backslash, one correct multiple-choice option with wrong alternatives, one or more exact short-answer alternatives and bare T/F/TRUE/FALSE. One optional #feedback is supported per ordinary answer.
  • Categories, inline comments, markup formats, per-answer formats, general feedback, weights, matching, numeric, missing-word, essay and description questions are refused. Unknown escapes and malformed source are refused. No Moodle default-markup interpretation or complete import/export compatibility is claimed.
  • JSON keeps the original source and parsed answer key. Per-question raw evidence retains comments inside its line range with LF normalization. CSV flattens answer records and applies spreadsheet formula protection. Files and source strings are not executed, rendered, fetched or saved automatically.
  • Processing is local. Output is limited to 1,000,000 text characters unless a stricter file limit is stated.

Common questions

Will every valid Moodle GIFT export be accepted?

No. This inspector deliberately accepts a narrow, explicitly plain-text profile. It refuses unsupported constructs rather than claiming to understand them. The report is a local review artifact, not proof that a Moodle importer will accept or grade a question identically.

Is this input sent to a server?

No. The application processes this input inside your browser tab and does not save it to persistent storage.
