How to use Ideal Camera Lens Geometry Workbench
Field angles use the sensor dimensions and focal length at infinity. Finite-focus image distance follows the thin-lens equation. Near/far object limits solve an entered image-plane blur-circle bound using the entrance pupil f/N; returned finite boundaries are checked against that circle.
- Enter sensor width (mm), sensor height (mm), focal length (mm), f-number n, entered circle of confusion (mm), focus distance from ideal lens plane (m).
- Choose the stated convention and check the units and supported model.
- Calculate, inspect the result, then copy or download it.
Good to know
- Sensor width/height 0.1–1000 mm, focal length 0.1–10000 mm, f-number 0.1–128, circle of confusion 0.000001–1 mm, and focus distance 0.001–1000000 m strictly beyond focal length. Approximate paraxial thin-lens geometry with unit pupil magnification only. Field angle is the infinity-focus convention; lens distortion, focus breathing, diffraction, aberrations, subject motion and actual perceptual sharpness are excluded. null far limit means the ideal bound extends to infinity.
- Local calculation only; no input persistence or external lookup. Text/JSON is limited to 30000 characters and output to 1000000 characters. Numeric model inputs and precision/work limits are stated on this page. Approximate JSON numbers retain full stored values; exact arithmetic outputs retain decimal or fraction strings. Unsupported states fail explicitly.
- Educational user-assumption arithmetic only. No live prices, laws, tax rules, quotes or financial advice.
Common questions
Does the near/far range guarantee that a photograph looks sharp?
No. It uses one blur-circle tolerance and an ideal thin-lens model. The appropriate tolerance depends on viewing, output and purpose, and a real lens has effects this calculation does not represent.
Is the input uploaded or saved?
No. The tool calculates inside this browser tab and provides a local download; it does not persist your input.
