How to use Break-even Calculator

Test whether a unit-based pricing model can cover its fixed costs. The calculator reports contribution per unit, the theoretical break-even quantity, and the rounded-up whole-unit sales target.

  1. Enter fixed costs for a consistent period.
  2. Enter the selling price and variable cost per unit in the same currency.
  3. Calculate the minimum whole units and revenue needed in this simplified model.

Good to know

  • Assumes one product, constant selling price, constant variable cost per unit, and fixed costs that do not change with volume.
  • A positive contribution per unit is required. Whole-unit counts beyond JavaScript safe integer precision are rejected.
  • Numbers use JavaScript floating-point arithmetic. Inputs are limited to 1,000 characters and a magnitude of 1 quadrillion. Results are rounded for display.
  • These are arithmetic estimates, not financial or tax advice. No currency conversion, fees, or legally applicable tax rules are included.

Common questions

Why is the whole-unit target rounded up?

A fractional unit cannot cover the remaining cost when a product is sold only in whole units. The target therefore rounds up to the first whole-unit quantity that covers costs.

What if variable cost is equal to the selling price?

Each sale contributes nothing toward fixed costs, so this model cannot produce a finite break-even volume.
