How to use Learning Curve Production Planner
The learning fraction is the effort ratio at a doubling of production. Its exponent is log2(fraction). Crawford applies that exponent to each unit; Wright applies it to cumulative average effort. Wright increments use an expm1 difference to preserve small changes.
- Enter first-unit effort (your time or cost unit), effort fraction per doubling, last unit number, first unit in reported batch.
- Choose the stated convention and check the units and supported model.
- Calculate, inspect the result, then copy or download it.
Good to know
- First-unit effort0.000001–1e9, learning fraction0.5–1, up to3000 units. At the Wright boundary0.5, cumulative effort stays constant and later unit increments are zero: a mathematical limit, not a production claim. Effort units and the learning fraction come from you; no industry curve, price or staffing forecast is supplied. Floating-point schedules are approximate.
- Runs locally without input persistence. Text/JSON fields have a30000-character cap unless a stricter page limit applies; output has a1000000-character cap. Exact-grid workflows preserve six-decimal arithmetic, while approximate workflows use finite floating-point values. JSON downloads retain complete stored numeric values and exact fractions where provided. Unsupported formats and detected numeric or work-budget excess return an error or a clearly unresolved classification.
- Educational user-assumption arithmetic only. No live prices, laws, tax rules, quotes or financial advice.
Common questions
Why do the two models give different totals?
They attach the learning ratio to different quantities. With first-unit effort100 and fraction0.8, Crawford gives unit2 effort80 and total180. Wright gives average80 at two units and total160.
Is the input uploaded or saved?
No. The tool calculates inside this browser tab and provides a local download; it does not persist your input.
