How to use Original Substitution Cryptogram Sheets

Turn your own short passage into a pencil-and-paper code puzzle. Supply an exact alphabet permutation or generate a local random derangement, choose a few plaintext hint letters and export a student sheet. Teacher wording and the complete key appear only in the teacher or JSON export choices.

  1. Enter a short original passage and choose a provided permutation or a locally generated derangement.
  2. Choose a few existing plaintext letters as optional hints and select student-only or teacher-inclusive output.
  3. Download the escaped HTML, verify the student file contains only intended hints and inspect the print layout before distributing it.

Good to know

  • Use 1–300 ASCII letters in at most 600 UTF-16 characters, 60 words, 24 characters per word and 12 lines. ASCII letter case is normalized to uppercase. Other alphabetic scripts are refused rather than transliterated; permitted punctuation, spaces and emoji stay visible.
  • A provided key is exactly 26 distinct uppercase ASCII letters. Fixed points are allowed and reported in teacher evidence. Random mode uses Web Crypto and unbiased shuffling, with a maximum of 128 derangement attempts; it may refuse instead of retrying indefinitely.
  • At most six distinct uppercase plaintext hint letters, each present in the passage. Student HTML and student result text omit the full key and original plaintext; any hints and unchanged characters still reveal information. JSON intentionally includes the teacher key.
  • This is an educational substitution puzzle, not secure encryption or a decryption solver. Generated HTML is escaped and script-free. Native browser/print checks are required; the profile does not promise a particular page count or identical font metrics on every printer.
  • Processing is local. Output is limited to 1,000,000 text characters unless a stricter file limit is stated.

Common questions

Is the student-only file safe to use as an encrypted private message?

No. A monoalphabetic puzzle is easy to analyze and is designed for learning. Student-only export simply omits the answer key; it does not provide confidentiality. Use only original or authorized classroom content.

Is this input sent to a server?

No. The application processes this input inside your browser tab and does not save it to persistent storage.
