How to use Ideal Pipe Flow and Head-loss Calculator
Velocity is volumetric flow divided by circular area. Reynolds number isρvD/μ. Entered Darcy friction factor gives pressure loss f(L/D)ρv²/2, with head loss ΔP/(ρg).
- Enter pipe diameter (m), volumetric flow (m³/s), pipe length (m), density (kg/m³), dynamic viscosity (pa·s), user darcy friction factor, user gravity (m/s²).
- Choose the stated convention and check the units and supported model.
- Calculate, inspect the result, then copy or download it.
Good to know
- Positive diameter, length, density, viscosity, gravity; nonnegative flow and Darcy factor. SI units, incompressible ideal single pipe only. No inferred friction factor, multiphase flow or system certification.
- Runs locally. Text/JSON fields are capped at30,000 characters; stricter page-specific and numeric-string limits also apply. Numeric inputs are bounded to magnitude1e15 and nonzero magnitude at least1e-100 unless an exact-string mode states otherwise. Approximate summaries use12 significant digits; CSV numeric cells retain the complete stored value and potentially formula-like string cells gain a protective apostrophe; unsupported, non-finite or detected underflow states return an error.
Common questions
Does Darcy friction factor equal Fanning friction factor?
No. Darcy is four times Fanning for the same convention. This tool requires the Darcy value and does not estimate it from Reynolds number.
Is the input uploaded or saved?
No. The tool calculates inside this browser tab and provides a local download; it does not persist your input.
