How to use Uncorrelated Measurement Uncertainty Budget

Standard uncertainties are supplied directly or calculated from half-widths using √3 for a rectangular distribution and √6 for a triangular one. Sensitivity-weighted contributions combine by root sum of squares; your coverage factor multiplies the combined standard uncertainty.

  1. Enter component json (label, uncertainty, sensitivity, distribution), entered coverage factor k.
  2. Choose the stated convention and check the units and supported model.
  3. Calculate, inspect the result, then copy or download it.

Good to know

  • 1–100 distinct components; finite magnitudes at most 1e9 and nonzero magnitudes at least 1e-12. Nonnegative uncertainty, any signed sensitivity, and coverage factor greater than zero through 1000. All resulting contributions must share the measurand’s output unit. Assumes uncorrelated inputs and an adequate first-order linearization. No covariance, expression parsing, effective degrees of freedom, automatic confidence level, calibration certificate or conformity decision.
  • Local calculation only; no input persistence or external lookup. Text/JSON is limited to 30000 characters and output to 1000000 characters. Numeric model inputs and precision/work limits are stated on this page. Approximate JSON numbers retain full stored values; exact arithmetic outputs retain decimal or fraction strings. Unsupported states fail explicitly.

Common questions

Does k = 2 always mean a 95% confidence interval?

No. Coverage depends on the output distribution and how reliably the standard uncertainty is estimated. This page uses your factor arithmetically and does not assign a confidence level.

Is the input uploaded or saved?

No. The tool calculates inside this browser tab and provides a local download; it does not persist your input.
