How to use Layered Flat-wall Heat Flow Workbench
Enter solid layers in left-to-right order with metres, W/(m·K) and a common area in m². Use surface boundary temperatures or explicitly supplied ambient film coefficients. Add each L/k and optional 1/h resistance, then resolve every signed temperature drop.
- Use the example as the schema; replace its labels and entered model assumptions.
- Enter solid layers in left-to-right order with metres, W/(m·K) and a common area in m². Use surface boundary temperatures or explicitly supplied ambient film coefficients. Add each L/k and optional 1/h resistance, then resolve every signed temperature drop.
- Calculate, inspect the complete witnesses and limitations, then copy or download the JSON report.
Good to know
- Use 1–30 named layers; thickness from 0.000001 through 1,000 m, conductivity from 0.000001 through 100,000 W/(m·K), and common area from 0.000001 through 1,000,000 m². Temperatures are −273.15 through 1,000,000 °C. Ambient film coefficients are 0.000001 through 100,000 W/(m²·K). All quantities are exact decimal strings with up to six places.
- Surface mode refuses film fields; ambient mode requires positive coefficients on both sides. Ordered interface temperatures and signed heat rate use the same exact flux. Equal temperatures produce zero heat flow; a hotter right boundary produces a negative value.
- Steady one-dimensional flat layers only: constant conductivity, common area, no internal source, perfect contact and optional entered constant convection films. No radiation, phase transition, thermal bridges, temperature-dependent properties, moisture, transient response, cylindrical geometry, material database, building compliance or design certification.
- Local calculation with no upload, input persistence or outside lookup. Model JSON is limited to 30,000 characters and 10,000 values. Decimal quantities are strings with up to six places; count fields use plain JSON integers. Exact fractions are capped at 8,192 bits. The complete JSON output is limited to 1,000,000 characters; approximate numbers preserve their stored values. Unsupported states fail explicitly.
Common questions
Why do ambient and surface temperatures give different results?
An ambient boundary lies across a fluid film from the wall surface. Its entered coefficient adds a resistance of 1/h per unit area and a corresponding temperature drop. A supplied surface temperature is already at the solid boundary, so adding that film again would count it twice.
Are my model inputs saved or sent to a server?
No. This model runs in the current browser tab and creates a local JSON download. It does not save your input or call an external data service.
