How to use Git Config File Workbench

Inspect a supplied Git configuration file or normalize its supported syntax while retaining repeated settings. Read quoted subsections, escapes, line continuations, implicit booleans and multivalued keys without opening a repository or following include directives.

  1. Provide git config source.
  2. Choose the supported mode and run the tool. Review its assumptions and any reported errors.
  3. Copy the result or download a separate output; reset to clear the current form.

Good to know

  • 100 KB of well-formed Unicode source, 5,000 physical lines and 1,000 variables. LF and CRLF are supported; bare CR and NUL are refused.
  • This explicit modern authoring profile supports alphanumeric/hyphen section names and quoted case-sensitive subsections. Deprecated dotted section/subsection syntax is refused. Section/variable names are case-insensitive.
  • Normalize retains entry order, subsection case, repeated values and implicit-boolean versus empty-value semantics. Comments and source spacing are not retained. Empty sections are omitted because they have no setting entries.
  • Include/includeIf paths, shell aliases, filters, remote URLs and credential helpers are inert text. No Git command, filesystem include, environment expansion or option-specific boolean/integer interpretation occurs.
  • Inputs are processed on this device and are not automatically saved or uploaded.

Common questions

Why are repeated values not collapsed to the last setting?

Git settings can be multivalued. This workbench retains every entry in order and reports repetitions so an option-specific consumer can apply the appropriate rule.

Does this change my original input?

No. The tool returns a separate result. Review that output before using it in another application.
