How to use Bibliographic Identifier Workbench

Review a small copied list of publishing identifiers before using it in a catalogue or manuscript. Each line retains its original spelling and a transparent check-digit result. ISBN conversion recalculates the appropriate check digit; it does not manufacture a registration or infer the book, serial, publisher or hyphenation group.

  1. Enter one explicitly labeled ISBN or ISSN per line.
  2. Run the local source-shape and weighted check-digit review.
  3. Inspect mismatches and any calculated ISBN mapping; verify allocation and publication metadata separately.

Good to know

  • At most 500 nonblank lines and 30,000 characters, with at most 100 characters per line. Labels are exact uppercase ISBN, ISBN-10, ISBN-13 or ISSN followed by a colon. Values accept ASCII digits, X/x, U+0020 spaces and hyphens only.
  • Spaces/hyphens in values are removed without assessing official grouping. Leading zeros remain significant and final x is canonicalized to X. ISBN-10 uses weighted modulus 11, ISBN-13 uses alternating 1/3 modulus 10 and ISSN uses weights 8 through 2 plus its final check.
  • ISBN-13 is restricted to 978/979 source prefixes. Valid ISBN-10 maps to 978; only a valid 978 ISBN-13 has the corresponding ISBN-10 mapping. A 979 result deliberately has no ISBN-10 conversion.
  • A valid check digit is not proof of an issued or correctly assigned identifier. No range/allocation database, publisher/country inference, title search, barcode image, registry request or source correction is performed. The all-zero example bodies demonstrate arithmetic only, not real publications.
  • Processing is local. Output is limited to 1,000,000 text characters unless a stricter file limit is stated.

Common questions

Can a mathematically valid number still be unassigned or attached to the wrong publication?

Yes. A check digit detects certain transcription errors; it cannot establish allocation or bibliographic identity. Use an authoritative publication record for those separate facts.

Is this input sent to a server?

No. The application processes this input inside your browser tab and does not save it to persistent storage.
