How to use Point-mass Inertia Workbench
Keep center-of-mass and inertia arithmetic exact, compare the parallel-axis tensor identity and recompute energy from each point’s cross-product velocity.
- Use the example as the schema; replace its labels and entered model assumptions.
- Keep center-of-mass and inertia arithmetic exact, compare the parallel-axis tensor identity and recompute energy from each point’s cross-product velocity.
- Calculate, inspect the complete witnesses and limitations, then copy or download the JSON report.
Good to know
- 1–200 distinct positive point masses. Decimal-string kilograms, signed meter coordinates and angular-velocity components; each input magnitude at most 1 billion. A reference and omega each have three Cartesian components.
- Discrete masses in a rigid configuration with pure rotation about the fixed reference. No density, mesh, continuous-body fitting, translation velocity, force prediction, principal-axis solver or safe speed/rating. Only radius of gyration uses an approximate square root.
- Local calculation with no upload, input persistence or outside lookup. Model JSON is limited to 30,000 characters and 10,000 values. Decimal quantities are strings with up to six places; count fields use plain JSON integers. Exact fractions are capped at 8,192 bits. The complete JSON output is limited to 1,000,000 characters; approximate numbers preserve their stored values. Unsupported states fail explicitly.
Common questions
Can the inertia tensor be singular?
Yes. A point at the reference contributes zero inertia, and masses on a single line have zero inertia about that line. These are valid discrete models; they do not provide a mechanical stability or strength assessment.
Are my model inputs saved or sent to a server?
No. This model runs in the current browser tab and creates a local JSON download. It does not save your input or call an external data service.
