How to use Basket Price Index Workbench

Revalue old and new baskets to calculate exact Laspeyres and Paasche relatives, then compare their approximate Fisher combination and adjacent-period links.

  1. Use the example as the schema; replace its labels and entered model assumptions.
  2. Revalue old and new baskets to calculate exact Laspeyres and Paasche relatives, then compare their approximate Fisher combination and adjacent-period links.
  3. Calculate, inspect the complete witnesses and limitations, then copy or download the JSON report.

Good to know

  • 1–50 distinct matched items and 2–12 distinct periods. Positive prices and nonnegative quantities are decimal strings at most 1 billion; every period needs at least one positive quantity.
  • Use unchanged per-item units, quality and a common currency across all periods. No missing items, currency conversion, seasonal substitution, official inflation series or causal interpretation. Fisher results are finite binary64 square-root approximations.
  • Local calculation with no upload, input persistence or outside lookup. Model JSON is limited to 30,000 characters and 10,000 values. Decimal quantities are strings with up to six places; count fields use plain JSON integers. Exact fractions are capped at 8,192 bits. The complete JSON output is limited to 1,000,000 characters; approximate numbers preserve their stored values. Unsupported states fail explicitly.

Common questions

Why can the direct and chained values differ?

The direct calculation holds the original comparison relationship. Chaining multiplies adjacent-period relationships, allowing the quantity baskets used in those comparisons to change. The table preserves the basket sums so that distinction is reviewable.

Are my model inputs saved or sent to a server?

No. This model runs in the current browser tab and creates a local JSON download. It does not save your input or call an external data service.
